Branch News
2009 Poppy Appeal Launched.
This years appeal was launched officially on Saturday 17th October by the Mayor of Lancaster. It was a well attended event with local politicians and Parliamentary Candidates all joining in with their support.
The Poppies and collecting tins have now all been distributed as we make a concerted effort to raise as much as we can for ex-servicemen and their families.
Mick Dennison, David Morris (Conservative) and Les Croombs attend the Launch of the Poppy Appeal
Legion Members help to Launch Armed Forces Week
Branch members were in attendance again at Torrisholme Cemetary as the Official Armed Forces Day 2009 flag was raised at the war graves section.
Sadly the public knowledge of this week of celebration is scant with our Council offering very little in support of this now annual event. To that end we at the York Hotel have organised an Armed Forces BBQ on Saturday 27th June to commemorate the day and to let all service personnel either serving or retired to get together for this period of celebration.
Tickets will cost £4.50 for the BBQ which starts at 4pm - please book in advance to help with organising enough food!
Legion mark Anzac Day with respect
Legion Members joined Australian and New Zealand nationals at Torrisholme Cemetary on Saturday 25th April to hounour Fligh Sgt Wilson from the New Zealand airforce who died in Morecambe Bay in 1944 during a training flight.
The day coincided with Anzac Day and full military honours were afforded to the stricken airman with the last post played at the graveside.
A buffet reception was held in the York Hotel afterwards with the Mayor of Lancaster attending.

Cheque handed over to Byng House
On Saturday 7th March 2009, a cheque for £800 from the Branch was handed over to the staff at Byng House in Southport by Ian & Sylvia Nicholson and Memebrship secretary - Les Croombs.

Race Night boosts Branch and Help for Heroes Funds
The Race Night that was held on Saturday 28th February made a massive £500 towards Branch and the Help for Heroes Funds and was enjoyed by all who attended.
Boosted by the York Hotel's locals branch members took part in betting on 8 video races, paid to own a horse and bought raffle tickets to reach the grand total on the night.
Once again, in this present economic climate, it was a fantastic amount raised - thinking caps are now on for the next event - do YOU have any ideas?
Poppy Appeal figure announced at the Christmas Lunch
The "Turkey and Tinsel" lunch on 30th November provided the backdrop for the announcement of the total monies raised during the period of Remembrance. Sylvia Nicholson proudly announced the total had reached just over £22,000 with more to come in from cheques and donations etc - a great result in this present economic climate.
Below are pictures of Legion members enjoying the day.
