York Hotel now offers dual sporting action!

Customers in the York can now get a sporting choice as the football season gets well and truly underway with a new multi room set up. The acquisition of a second Sky box means both Sky and ESPN games can be shown simultaneously therefore eliminating the clashes when we have a Championship game and Premier game on at the same time.

The front room screen can show Sky Sports 1, 2 & 3 with the main bar and sports room showing the full package, this means all ESPN games will be shown in the main and sports rooms with other games shown in the front room - a true choice.

Give the York a ring anytime to find out if your favorite team is playing live.

Our local MP drops in to take part in "Proud of Pub's" Week

Geraldine Smith MP dropped into the York Hotel on Friday 17th July as part of the Publican's "Proud of Pub's "week and it coincided with our great news that we had been named "Pub of the Year" by the Visitor newspaper.

She mingled with the locals and enjoyed a buffet lunch, she was very complimentary about the changes made at the York Hotel and wished us well for the future. She is no stranger to the York as she is President of the women's section of the local Royal British Legion Branch.

It was great to see her in the York and the fact she gave up an hour in her busy day to share in our win.

Armed Forces Day celebrated at The York Hotel

Despite very little pre-advertising by the local media (if non at all) Armed Forces Day was celebrated at the York Hotel on Saturday 27th June after a church service at St Barnabas.

Veterans and serving personel made their way to the York for an afternoon BBQ and to reminice about their time in the forces, a great afternoon was had by all.

The York Hotel is spearheading a campaign to get next years activities advertiased well in advance and be bigger and better than the last two damp squibs - after all, our Prime Minister has decreed that it will be celebrated every year. Come on local council - pull your fingers out

Soul weekend  - A great success

The 3rd North Lancs Soul Weekender that took place over the last weekend in May was deemed a great success by all those who arranged, attended and worked on it – it was also a great weekend to advertise the virtues of the town and made all the local organisers “Proud of Morecambe”.

Once again “The Seaside Soul Club” pulled out all the stops to promote the annual event with posters, press photo calls and Sean O’Connor’s intimate knowledge of the Soul Radio scene to get the message across the whole country. This had the effect of drawing in soul fanatics from as far apart as Brighton and Scotland, plus a few more towns in between. Indeed, the Wakefield City Soul Club made their annual pilgrimage to the town and camped out in both the York Hotel and Smokey O’Connors, both giving up rooms to host the event.

It all kicked off on Friday 29th with a meet and greet session in the York Hotel and the first ever use of the wooden floored dining room as a chill out area, the newly decorated sports room provided the other dance area – time to get moving! The music lasted until 2pm on Saturday morning leaving just about the regulation 8 hours sleep before a session of Breakfast Soul leading up to the FA Cup Final.

The action then moved on to Smokies where they utilised the dance floor upstairs and an area downstairs in the main bar to create a second, two room venue – great music choices for all. Headlining was local celebrity, Wayne Hemmingway – he got the upstairs dance floor moving and shaking.

The majority of the DJ’s were stopping at the York Hotel and they made their bleary eyed way up to bed to get just a few hours sleep before the marathon Sunday session until two the following morning. Once again there was a guest DJ in the diminutive form of ex-Coventry City Footballer Mickey Gynn (I bet the editor is wincing at the thought of that!).

The weekend allowed Mick Dennison from the York Hotel to fully make use of his new outdoor patio by arranging a BBQ evening meal for the revellers; managing to feed over 50 people. “”The original idea was for a Sunday lunch”, said Mick, “however the great weather took over and we hastily sorted out a BBQ – it went down a storm”.

Other festival goers were very complimentary not only of the two venues but of the town itself. Ian Dewhirst, a soul DJ based in London and who can command a four figure fee for a nights work raved over the great setting for the weekend. “You walk down that promenade, take in the beautiful view and couldn’t wish for a better setting for sweet soul music”, he enthused.

Other visitors from Wakefield even managed to drop into Potts Pies on Pedder Street and thought they were the best they had tasted – not bad from Yorkshire folk!

So, all in all, a very successful weekend that saw visitors come into the town, make use of hotels, pubs, cafes, shops etc and the best thing of all it was done as a free festival without any money coming from the council. Let’s hope next year we can make it bigger and better and promote the whole area, once again making everyone “Proud of Morecambe”.

Friday 23rd January - Burns night celebrated in the York!

A good mixture of locals and Scot's exiles made up the diners for the first ever Burns Supper held at the York Hotel, a few days before the bard's 250th birthday.

A feast of Scotch Broth, followed by Caledonian Chicken (Haggis inside a chicken breast) Tatties and Neeps with a whisky gravy finally followed up by raspberry trifle, served up by the York's cook, Lynn Dennison who handed over the final reins to her kitchen assistant Ian Dewhirst whilst she sat and enjoyed the meal.

The full traditions of a Burns night were observed including the Selkirk Grace, the Ode to the Haggis and the Ode to the Ladies - Mrs Pam Billingham replied to the laddies from the lasses.

The whole evening was deemed a great success and bookings for parties of up to 20 people can now be made for next January.

Saturday 10th January - Danny Carlton signs for the York

The York Hotel made a great signing today when we secured the services of Danny Carlton - well for one night only!

It was agreed that during the post Christmas party for the hard working staff that boyfriends/girlfriends and partners of staff would help out a little bit behind the bar.

Danny, ably assisted by our barman Ian Dewhirst tried his hand at pulling pints and you never know - if it all goes pear shaped for him on the football pitch there will always be a job for him at the York.
